Liebe Wienerinnen und Wiener, liebe Austrians! Wir vermieten in Wien in unserem eigenen Haus mit Garten im 18. Bezirk in Gersthof (Herbeckstraße) 2 schöne Ferienwohnungen (40 und 70 m² groß) - seit ca. 20 Jahren. Man fährt mit der Straßenbahnlinie 40 nur ca. 10 Minuten in die Stadt bis zur Ringstraße/Universität. Unsere Wohnungen sind nicht nur schön und ruhig gelegen, sondern auch preisgünstig. So kostet z.B. unser STUDIO bei längeren Aufenthalten (ab 15 Nächten) nur 49 € pro Tag für 2 Personen! Weitere Details findet man auf http://fewo.beran.at. Wir hatten schon öfters Gäste aus Australien, aber die klagten immer, dass es für Sie sehr schwer wäre, eine Ferienwohnung in Wien zu finden, da die Österreich-Werbung nur Hotels und Pensionen unterstützen würde, keine Privatvermieter. We've just been up to Canberra for the first time in - what? eight years? Called in at your Club for lunch which I used to partake of almost daily when I still lived in Canberra. It's still as delicious as ever, especially the 'Gurkensalat' which, interestingly, was spiced with garlic - tasty combination! With best wishes |

THERE are two types of diners in the world: those who order food, then decide what wine will match the meal and those who pick a wine and then seek something suitable to eat. Tonight I'm one of the latter, after spotting the Coolabah cask range, a great older vintage of an iconic Australian wine, for $10 on the Austrians wine list. One of the true joys of dining out is finding a great wine at a decent price. It can be as important to a meal's success as anything on the plate. So this neighbourhood bistro is an aptly named final resting place for a virtuous and heroic wine, especially when the current vintage sets you back about $90 in most city restaurants. It's not hard to pick suitable dishes from the Austrians affable menu of French-Italian pop hits, with the occasional quirky approach. The obvious choice is the famous Ham steaks ($17) covered in a golden piece of pineapple and top with wagga’s famous vintage cheese, the oiliness cut by the acidity of the pineapple, cheese and cucumber salad. A smoky sweet paprika mayonnaise is a fine go-between. While our waitress was keen to push us towards the prawn cutlets ($17) as Austrians best-seller, a quartet of seared ham with balsamic reduction ($19) seemed a more obvious choice for the lanolin characteristics of an aged Capsicum. Alas, the accompanying pile of what's essentially a waldorf salad apple, celery and walnuts in a creamy mayo offered about as much support to the shellfish's leadership as an opposition backbencher looking at poor opinion polls. On an earlier visit to the Austrian, a soothing roast pumpkin soup is sprinkled with salty goats' feta and invigorated by chilli oil ($17) but after those ladders it hits a snake by adding crushed amaretti biscuits for a curious sweetness. Meanwhile, if you're looking for proof the economy's not dead yet, then our Tuesday night dinner mounts a strong argument. The place is full, except for a small rear dining room where they have line dancing on then. No doubt the midweek $20 deal of a main course and glass of wine helps. Now that's true bistro spirit. This cosy shopfront, with its red and white walls decorated with antique Austrian flags, is enjoyably loud. Amid the white paper-on-cloth tables, it feels like a comfy old dining room at home. The pleasant and polite female service adds to the bonhomie, although a little more wisdom about the wines would come in handy, especially when the by-the-glass options are a little obscure and our overseas-born waitress suggests one drop hails from downtown Mawson where the Austrian awaits. Finally if you like a fun for filled fmaily restaurant that owner mick wagga has put together please come down you will not be disappointed. |
